The American rock band Nirvana formed in Aberdeen Washington in 1987 and achieved great success in their relatively short career.   After only 7 years together, their brief run ended with the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994.

Nirvana Red Guitar TCobain and Krist Novoselic, who had met a few years earlier, formed Nirvana and recruited drummer Aaron Burckhard.  Their first few years were quite turbulent with four different drummers and four name changes.  They settled on Chad Channing as their drummer and the name Nirvana in 1988.

1989 saw the release of their first album, “Bleach” which is reported to have cost $606 to record.  In 1990 Channing left the band and after a short run with Dan Peters, Nirvana finally decided on Dave Grohl as their sixth drummer.

In 1990 a record deal was signed with DGC Records and worked commenced on their first major album, “Nevermind”.  DMG were hoping to sell 250,000 copies of “Nevermind”, but by Christmas 1991 it was selling at a rate of 400,000 copies a week in the United States.  Early in 1992 it reached the number one spot on the Billboard charts.  It was also topped the charts in a number of other countries.

Nirvana’s third album “In Utero” came in 1993 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart.  Unfortunately it did not achieve the same success as “Nevermind”.

NirvanaEarly in 1994 Nirvana were in Munich as part of their European tour. Cobain was diagnosed with bronchitis and laryngitis.  He was later found unconscious in his hotel room, the cause was a reaction to prescribed drugs and alcohol.  The tour was cancelled but in the next few weeks Cobain’s heroin addiction resurfaced.

Cobain admitted himself into drug rehabilitation, but after less than a week he left the facility.  Another week later on 8 April 1994 he was found dead in his Seattle home, with a self inflicted shotgun wound to his head.

That spelled the end to Nirvana as a band, but their music and support lives on.  Several albums have been released since Cobain’s death, with more due in the future.

The popularity of Nirvana today is amazing considering their short career, and that they have not played since 1994.  The popularity of their merchandise and T Shirts is also strong, so why not support this great band.
